Our adult enrichment and lifelong learning programs take on engaging and thought-provoking topics to guide meaningful conversation and opportunity for personal growth.

Classes and group discussion opportunities are offered throughout the year.

  • Chalice Circles are once per month discussion gatherings with a small group of no more than eight other participants. The discussion centers around our monthly Worship and programming themes. A small amount of reading or listening preparation is expected. Chalice Circles are a great opportunity to meet other members and to share meaningful conversations to help everyone grow and deepen as Unitarian Universalists.
  • Personal interest classes and groups include Meditation, a Humanist discussion group, our Jewish Heritage group, Tai Chi, Comparative Religions – all led by Church members.
  • If you have a program that you would like to provide for Adult Enrichment you can submit a proposal. For a Sunday morning class submit a proposal here. For non-Sunday morning classes or if you are not sure submit a proposal here.

Moving Meditation through Tai Chi Chuan
Sundays February 18 – March 24   1:30 to 3:00 in the DUUC Learning Center
facilitated by Don Dudycha
Tai Chi Chuan is a sequence of movements or postures useful for physical fitness, meditation, and self-defense. It looks like a dance, but its appearance disguises significant martial capabilities. It’s an ancient Chinese internal martial art of Taoist origins.
We’re going to learn the Beijing style or the 24 posture form of Tai Chi Chuan developed in China in 1956. It’s designed for beginning and intermediate participants. We’ll be emphasizing the meditative and health aspects of the form. Learning Tai Chi requires and promotes effort, concentration, and mindfulness. Our goal is to be able to do the form independently by the end of the course.     Registration is closed

Graceful Preparation

I’ve Died, Now What?
Workshop 1 in DUUC’s Graceful Preparation Series
Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 9:00am
Rorik Larson is reprising an updated presentation he gave to church members via zoom during the height of the COVID pandemic. He will discuss practical proactive estate planning through the eyes of someone having to settle a loved one’s financial legacy. Through this perspective, we can take steps to help those loved ones through the emotional challenges of closing one’s estates in ways that we want. Rorik will discuss many proactive actions that we can do to help those taking care of our personal finances after we pass on. There will be time for questions and discussion. A handout will be provided to attendees to help them consider their own proactive actions after the presentation.
Rorik Larson, CFP ® , EA is a fee-only Certified Financial Planner professional located in Palos Heights, IL serving clients throughout the Chicago area and across the country.

TRANSGENDER INCLUSION IN CONGREGATIONS
A 6-SESSION COURSE
This course is for individuals and groups who want to take their knowledge and skills to the next level in terms of trans identity and how to create congregations that are fully inclusive and affirming of the full breadth of gender diversity.

Over six sessions you will deeply explore the intersection of trans identity, spirituality, and faith community, and gain the grounding, context, and skills to transform yourself and your congregation.
This course is for everyone from novices on trans identity to those with decades of life experience. Rather than simply offering a “trans 101,” this class pushes participants to the next level of congregational welcome, relationship-building, and skills-building. It counters mainstream narratives about who trans people are; supports understanding of non-binary identities (such as genderqueer, agender, and Two-Spirit); and employs a deeply intersectional approach.

The course is composed of six sessions, each of which includes a 45- to 55-minute lecture by Rev. Mykal Slack and Zr. Alex Kapitan. The lectures are pre-recorded so that you can view them at any time that is convenient to you. Reflection questions and resources that take the conversation deeper will be shared during our weekly one hour discussion session.

Registration is closed – Sundays 1:30 – 2:30pm March 10, 17, 24, April 7, 14 & 21    (Childcare available)

Registration is closed – Mondays 7:00 – 8:00pm March 11, 18, 25, April 8, 15 & 22
